I love looking at old woodcuts and engravings of demons, devils and those horned punishers awaiting sinners in hell. My favourites are those with extra faces over their nether regions – these extra faces (with sometimes even more grotesque features than their regular faces) were intended to symbolise the sin of lust and wanton sexual temptation, and reveal the true face of evil.

I was wondering….if these double-faced demons took selfies, which of their faces would they shoot? And thus was born a series of selfie demons, taking ‘hellfies’ for Hellstagram.

“Multi famam, conscientiam pauci verentur”, Latin for “Many fear their reputation, few their conscience” (a quote by Pliny) is on the banner wrapping around this proud dog-headed demon, taking a hellfie after winning ‘pitchfork-wielder of the year’ at the 2022 Hellfest convention. Polished and set in a bevelled black wooden frame.
